German silver convertible candlestick/sconce hurricane lamp with glass shade (1830-50)
Spun & cast spring loaded columnar candle lamp in German Silver on a domed circular base. The shaft of the candlestick is hinged to accommodate its transformation to a candle sconce. The candlestick shaft is capped with a cast domed cover with a wick hole, allowing the candle to be pressed upward as the flame burns the candle. Fitted over the cap is a vasiform hand blown and etched glass shade edged with an applied cranberry glass bead.
Continental (probably Bavaria), mid-1800's.
