Geometric abstract oil on panel by Louis Graf (1950's)
Oil on board abstract geometric composition in shades of blue, purple, red, yellow, and white. The field of largely rectangular shapes is bisected by a diagonal line sweeping from the bottom left to the upper right of the frame, which adds a dynamism to the composition and acts as a baseline for the other shapes to play off. The brushwork is both visible and playful, and in the lighter tones of blue, yellow, and white, there is a transparency to the paint which both hints at and obscures what is either an underlying design or previous composition.
The work has been archival float mounted with a deep bevel mat border and fitted under glass. The artist was active in California in the first half of the 20th century and studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute in San Francisco at the turn of the 20th century.
