Chinese hand carved cinnabar plate on brass (c. 1850)
Hand carved cinnabar plate with scalloped rim on brass. The carved scene is of a mountain and river landscape. In the distant background are three undulating mountains facing a body of water with trees growing on promontories.Craggy rock cliffs with trees and plants fill the rest of the landscape. The prominent features are the trees, each depicted with leaves of different shapes. The sky, the water, and the solid ground are done in three individual repeating patterns that show off the skills of the carver. A circular band of boldly carved archaistic motifs decorate the outer rim. The same decorative band is on the under rim.
