Native American ash splint market basket (c. 1880-1900)
Native American woven ash splint basket with carved & bent loop handle flattened at the apex. The rim of the basket is comprised of two carved & bent ash splints with ash stays, woven from either side of the rim making a woven splint base for the basket. The sides have a double band of 1/8" splines woven into the strays, over two 1/2" bands which accent the rim. Below the 1/2" bands the weave reverts to 1/8" splines to the base of the basket.
Native American, Winnebago / Ho-Chunk, circa 1880-1900.
Condition: Some small losses, paint transfer, and marks throughout. Wear commensurate with age and use.
