Chinese barrel form brass bound stave constructed grain measure (c. 1915)
Chinese barrel form brass bound stave constructed grain measure with projecting pulley posts on the sides and a brass drop ring handle with circular brass back plate and bail stop in the front. The barrel is a standard grain measure for a "dou" – a traditional Chinese unit of measure. On one side of the barrel in a regular Chinese calligraphic script reads: "Chinese Republic 3rd Year (1915)." The four characters following the date translates to "Our own Eastern Tree Hall" - a name for a building. On the other side of the barrel are three characters, presumably the name of the calligrapher.
China, circa 1915.
