Framed Congolese kuba cloth mat (c. 1900's)
West African kuba cloth mat of palm fiber woven on a raffia ground laid in a geometric pattern of dyed and natural raffia fiber. Archival mount on a fabric screen and framed in an ebonized oak molding. Observations on the esthetics of these weavings compare them to African musical forms enlivened by off-beat phrasing, as exemplified by breaks in the expected continuum of surface design and by the staggering and suspension of pattern or color, unlike the European composition of integrated repetition or repeat.
Congo, early 20th century.
