Japanese Maki-e lacquered oval wood tray on stand (1850-1900)
Japanese standing rim, Maki-e lacquered oval wood tray of the Meiji Period. The tray features fine gilt decoration in the form of two small birds, possibly sparrows, fluttering among peony branches. The tray is fitted to a custom rim on a Chinese rosewood stand of the same period.
Japanese, 1850-1900.
Condition: The tray top has some cracks to the top and there are signs of wear to the gilt surfaces which reveal the red boll over the gesso below (see photos for detail). All surfaces have been polished, and the stand has been affixed with a custom standing rim frame for the tray. Wear commensurate with age and use.
