Pair of silver vermeil shell form open salts by Wilkens (c. 1880)
Pair of shell form open salts in silver vermeil, resting on a scalloped circular foot. Wilkens was established in Bremen, Germany in 1810 and has continued under that name to the present. The irregularity of the pre-1880 German silver hallmarks makes it difficult to establish an exact date of fabrication, but similar shell motifs and execution from Wilkens date to the pre-1850's. Stunning repoussé and chasing.
Impressed on the top edge with hallmarks and the name Wilkens, 800.
Bremen, Germany, before 1880.
