Chinese export porcelain Canton platter decorated in the traditional tea house motif in cobalt underglaze blue.

As indicative of Canton firing techniques, this platter has tiny black iron spots, dots of pitting due to uneven glazing, and the edges of the platter are not smooth. All these imperfections are signs of authenticity as blue and white Canton ceramics are highly collectible as country antiques. In the 18th century, blue and white porcelain came into the United States on clipper ships as ballasts and they were used as everyday dishes.

China, made for the Western trade, circa 1850.
