Framed Chinese armorial export octagonal dinner plate (c. 1780)
Chinese famille rose porcelain armorial plate mounted in a shadow box. The plate features a rounded octagonal form with chamfered corners, and decorated in the French taste (Compagnie des Indes - French East India Company) with swags of flower and gilt ribbons hanging from the double bowstring edging. The cavetto is decorated with a continuous spearhead border and centering on a shield with a lion rampant on a red field surmounted by a helmet. This style of border design–popular between 1780 and 1790–is seen in armorial wares produced for a wide market, including Spanish and British family arms.
