Jade bi ring on black silk cord set with coral (3000-2100 BC)
Archaic period nephrite jade Bi disc with an asymmetrical white alteration, carved with a pair of circling chi dragons. The Bi disc is suspended from a black silk cord gathered above the disc with a natural coral bead and fastened with a sterling silver lobster clasp. The surfaces have a finely etched border along the circumference of the disc. The dragons are a Chinese projection of power over the natural world and sign of good fortune. The ‘bi’ is a ritual object signifying the sun, although its exact meaning is unknown.
