Pair of American mahogany gondola chairs (c. 1815-35)
Pair of American mahogany and figured mahogany veneered gondola chairs. The chairs feature a boxed slip seat & single vertical baluster form silhouette back splat below a crest rail. The back is defined by a continuous bull nose molding encompassing the side rails and it follows across the upper rim of the crest rail. The front legs are pseudo sabered with raked rear legs. This design is listed in "The New York Book of Prices for Manufacturing Cabinet and Chair Work" from the New York Society of Cabinet Makers (J. Seymour, 1817).
American, circa 1813-35.
Condition: Frames have been refinished and the joints have been re-glued for stability. Removable slip seats have been newly reupholstered. Wear commensurate with age and use.
